Adam Freeland's critically acclaimed debut album 'Now & Them', released under the Freeland moniker in May 2003 was a sonic masterclass. Fusing gnarling rock and filthy bass heavy beats the album spawned the monster single and one of the year's biggest anthems 'We Want Your Soul'. A worldwide tour followed where Adam and his band played everywhere from Coachella and The Burning Man festival in the US, The Good Vibrations Tour in Australia and The Reading and Leeds festival in the UK.
As one of the world's leading DJs Adam Freeland's profile has rocketed since the release of 'Now And Them'. He has recently supported Massive Attack and The Prodigy on tour. Played alongside Metallica at Rock in Rio, Headlined the Glastonbury Festival dance tent live on Radio 1 and has residencies at all around the world. Adam is currently in the studio working on his new album, due in spring 2006.
Adam Freeland: "When asked to compile this Back to Mine, I initially starting scouring my record collection for my favourite records of all time and those that have had the biggest influence on my style. But where do you start? There has been dozens of amazing compilations by dj's and artists citing their influences. The gauntlet was truly set as to who can pull out the dopest, rarest and most obscure gems. So I just decided to 'Do what it says on the tin' and put together a list of tracks that I'm playing back at my place on Marine Parade in Brighton right now. Some old some new, some well known, some more obscure, but all by artists who I'm totally in love with. This is a snapshot of some of my favourite tracks that are keeping my neighbors up right now. I have compiled the mix to start all guns blazing, as you would want to hear arriving back home steaming after a big night, then, as the evening progresses, it gradually mellows out to end up as a stoned, horizontal, blissfull haze."

Trail of the dead- Will you smile again for me.
“I first heard this band a couple of years ago, their track 'Perfect Teenhood' hooked me in. The latest album ”Worlds Apart” is a masterpiece. This is the opening track, it's just ridiculously epic, pumps me full of adrenaline every time. Demands to be played really f**kin loud!”
Autolux-Turnstile Blues.
“When I was a kid there were albums like Pixies Doolittle and Massive Attacks Blue lines that I had to listen to as ritual every single day. But not since then has an album formed a sound track to a section of my life the way this debut from Autolux “ Future Perfect' has. I must have listened to this album at least once every day for the past six months. It's got everything I wanna hear form a record. They have this chick drummer called Carla, her beats are sick! Turnstile blues intro's with this killer break that just sucks you in. It really appeals to the beat head within me.”
Interpol - Untitled.
“I love this band. This is the opening track of their first album, its all about that guitar melody, and bassline. I keep finding myself wanting to play it over and over. Seemed to flow so perfectly out of Autolux that it just had to go on this mix.”
TV on the Radio - Staring at the sun.
“I've heard this band described as a Black Radiohead, but I think that doesn't really do them much justice. Beautiful, almost barbershop style, vocal harmonies, great songs and a totally original style. You have to hunt down their album and the acapella version of the Pixies 'Mr Grieves' too.”
Ambulance ltd - Yoga Means Union
“Love the way this track just keeps building and its ends up just pumping along in a groove that could almost be mistaken for one of Evil Nine's club records or mine. It's just got that vibe. A kina rolling prog rock wig out.”
Beta Band- It's not too beautiful
“These guys never did themselves any favours by totally dismissing their own records in the press before they were even released, but I think they made some great tracks. I've done a bit of double copy re-editing on it for this mix chopping out Hitchcock's 'psyco' esque sections so it works more in tune with the mood I tried to set.”
El-P- Constellation Recall
“I got turned onto NYC's Def Jux label through the works of Aesop rock, Edan and RjD2. All great artists. But El-P's “Collecting the Kid” album is my most played Def Jux moment so far. Wicked melancholic sountracky beats. Hip-hop as it should rightly be, not the cliché that we mostly associate with 'Hip Hop' today. This female vocal song is very lo-fi, it sounds like it could all fall apart any minute, but just sets a mood that really works at that moment on the mix.”
PJ- Harvey - Slow Drug.
“I've been a big fan of PJ since I toured with her on the Big Day Out tour a few years ago. Her presence on stage just had my jaw on the ground. I've since bought every record she has ever made. 'Slow Drug' is something quite out of character for her, its got an electronic production edge. The whole vibe is so druggy; it's that perfect 'off your head on the sofa watching the walls melt as its getting light' moment.”
Elliot Smith -Needle In the Hay
“This was the track that turned me onto Elliot Smith when I heard it first in the Royal Tenenbaums movie. What an amazing song. Why do all the real heroes get killed or kill them selves!? This song is here by way of tribute to the loss of a great talent.”
Jape-Floating.
“Fantastic song from this little known artist from Dublin. Has to be up for contender for best opening lyric ever, the whole song is about a floaty 'E' experience. Check it.”
Funkadelic -Maggot Brain
“I had to have a guitar solo moment on the mix just because it's so not cool. Love this piece of music, no beats in sight and the killer crunch of the guitar frequencies, totally presses my buttons, a kind of a tribute to Hendrix. When I grow up I want to be Jimi.”
Dykehouse- Sandy Strip
“Taken from their “Midrange” album. Not really characteristic of their sounds The original is only a 50 seconds long skit, but I've mangled it a bit and extended it to catch the vibe I wanted to paint at this point in the come down.”
M83 - Lower your eyelids to die with the sun.
“A ridiculously epic Gladiator sized monster. Its so over the top I think it kind of has to be tongue in cheek, never the less every time it gives me Goosebumps. A future classic for sure.”
Trans am- Single ray of light on an otherwise cloudy day.
“I absolutely love Trans am. They have just got the raw crunchy grooves. However, this track is just a drone, and I'm sure their record company thought I was tripping when I tried to licence a single minute long drone for the comp but it had to be there. It's not about melody rhythm of lyrics, just raw gritty air burning texture.”
Boards Of Canada- Zoetrope.
“Had to get at least one electronic artist on the comp considering my roots. Boards Of Canada have had heavy rotation on late nights back at mine over the years and this track just says it all, so very simple and beautiful. The perfect end of night come down to fall unconscious on the sofa to.” |
